A Bit of Scotland Magic: Capturing Moments with Gabby
Updated: Jun 7
Capturing the magic that Scotland has consumed of my heart these past 8 years has been difficult to describe with only words. While scrolling through socials, the algorithm delivered to me content from a photographer named Gabby Secomb Flegg featuring her curated "Main Character Moment" photoshoots and workshops located in Scotland. Check out her page and socials for Scotland Magic. And then the inspiration hit! If I could have photos captured of me being enveloped by the city I love so much (Edinburgh), then maybe, just maybe, the magic I feel can be expressed visually.
With Gabby's recent boom of social media attention, I knew it was a long shot that she would be available during my trip to schedule a session. I reached out to her and, as expected, she was fully booked but encouraged me to join her waiting list. I was bummed but also knew that regardless of the shoot happening or not, I was going to still have an incredible time on my return trip and would do what I could with my own camera to capture the moments of me reuniting with a piece of my heart.
A couple weeks ahead of leaving for my trip, Gabby reached out to me that she actually had a spot open up while I am planning to be in Edinburgh. It was a no-brainer - YES! Sign me up!! Thank you universe for making this happen.
Gabby made the entire experience leading up to the photoshoot incredibly comfortable and informative. She carries the utmost professionalism while also giving warm, approachable, big-sister, hype-babe vibes. As soon as we met the morning of the shoot over coffee at Milkman, it was an instant connection. We chose locations for the shoot that meant most to me personally.
When I first came to Scotland back in 2015, my very first spot to explore was Victoria Street and Grassmarket in Old Town. Every day I am not in Scotland, I think about it - and most of the time, I reflect back on the time I would spend getting lost in the beauty and rich history of that area. Therefore, the location just had to be along Victoria Street.
We met early in the morning before the hustle and bustle of the city's commuters, entertainers and visitors came to life. It felt as though we had the entire city to ourselves. First we took a few shots in front of St. Giles' Cathedral on the Royal Mile followed by a quick stop at the Writer's Museum before heading down to Victoria Street. Gabby knew exactly the "moments" and feelings I wanted to capture in this photoshoot and she shared in that vision. Her instructions to help me with poses were incredibly helpful while also making sure I felt comfortable and at ease with the process.
The results of our shoot together perfectly captured what I was hoping it would from the beginning. Not only were the moments I reunited with a piece of my heart snapped in these frames, the connection between subject and photographer was also adding to the magic of this entire experience.
Check out Gabby's social media and website details. Her work is stunning and she truly has a talent for seeking and documenting the mystical and magical beauty in whatever comes into focus on her camera lens.
